Summary report:

  • McMilllan coach (53 seater, driven by our usual driver Michael O’Hare) left JDLC at 3.45 pm with 46 paying passengers (£2 each), including 24 swimmers, 19 adults and three banks assistants from the PTL squad.
  • Three adults and four swimmers traveled separately.
  • Arrived Orchard Leisure center at 1730. This is a bit of an old-fashioned pool and swimmers complained that the tiles on the banks hurt their feet!
  • Racing started at 6.03pm and it was quickly apparent that we were in with a good chance, as the scores never got much more than 4 points apart.
  • At the start of the free-style relays Armagh were only 2 points ahead and so it was all to play for.  Ballymoney won the first two relays, putting us 6 points in front. Defeat in the third relay narrowed our lead to two points.
  • In you weren’t there just imagine the noise coming from the banks as the swimmers took to the water for the last race, an experience to enjoy no matter what the outcome.
  • Unfortunately, as the final score indicates, we were beaten in the final race, the “D” group free-style relay, leaving us a mere two points adrift.
  • Thoughts turned for a while to a “flyer” by an Armagh swimmer that had been picked up in one of the earlier relays. The consensus of opinion was however that it was too late to formally raise an objection and seek to gain the overall victory by pursuing the disqualification of the relevant swimmer and gaining a three point advantage as a result. Not an easy judgment but probably for the best. It was said that “At least the moral victory is ours”.

  • We were back on road (tea-less!) by 7.45 pm and back at JDLC by 9.25pm.

  • Who knows if our race record will be enough to take us to the Teletots finals on 2nd Jun.? Watch this space. One thing is sure, our swimmers gave it their best and we hope they had a lot of fun doing it.
